A guide to Horizon festival by michael brennan

Every so often you cross paths with people that make your environment better. Michael Brennan is one of those people. He is the Gallery Director over at Noosa Regional Gallery and — as of this very moment — deep within a five-week-long Floating Land campaign, which closes this weekend. His dedication to the arts and willingness to challenge the status quo is contagious.

Cheers for the guide, Michael. And, if you haven’t done so already, go and check out Floating Land while you still can.

nonsensual

I love projects that make you feel uncomfortable in ways that we all should more often — and I reckon this promises to be one of them. Honest, colourful and darkly humorous — these conflicting characteristics will no doubt leave you trying to find your place in it all, which is one of the things I think art should do whenever it can.

Kabi Kabi Connections

The meeting of Aunty Helena’s rich cultural knowledge and her generosity in sharing this with James Muller’s creative and technical expertise makes for a stunning experience of place. When these projections merge and interact with the environment that surrounds them, both add something new to each other.

Homegrown: Where to from here

I love it when an art project can draw our attention to an unseen or ignored issue and do it in a visually or experientially arresting way. The practices of Nicole Voevodin-Cash and Teddy Horton have separately captured my attention and I can’t wait to see what they do together.

Unapologetically Dressed

How good are Ketakii and Shaye?! I lived in the Nambour of Melbourne for a long time and what you encounter on the streets of these places are some of the most attention-grabbing and authentic expressions of identity that you could see anywhere. More people should dress like this.

Your Local Photo Club

LANTANA is one of the most interesting spaces on the Sunshine Coast. When artists get together and make something happen themselves, you get access to a way of thinking and working that often gets stripped away in more formal spaces. And a one-night-only event makes it all the more a must-see.

At our core: we celebrate place — it’s the heartbeat of the festival — and our programming reflects this. But, more importantly, we honour the Traditional Custodians of the Country on which we stand — the Kabi Kabi Peoples and Jinibara Peoples.

Our events vary. And they’re (almost) always in spectacular locations. There’s music, art, theatre, dance, workshops, ceremony, and plenty for the family.

So, pop the kettle on, put your feet up, and enjoy flicking through this year’s program — we’d love to see you at an event.

See you on the horizon,
