Homegrown: For The People

Horizon Festival, supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), is calling for submissions from established Sunshine Coast-based artists to present new or existing works as part of our 2022 Homegrown program. 

Through Homegrown: For The People we are seeking projects that foster a sense of connection and belonging for Sunshine Coast residents and have a positive impact on our community. Artists are encouraged to consider presentation in public space/s and the project should see the artist/s experimenting and pushing the boundaries of their creative practice, engaging deeply with residents in the creation and/or delivery of the project.

We’d like to hear from artists working across visual arts, dance, theatre, music and interdisciplinary artforms, with proposals for works to be presented during Horizon Festival 2022 (26 Aug – 4 Sep 2022).

Applying artists can propose collaborations with artists from outside of the local region, including interstate and international, if this is critical to the project and feasible within budget and travel conditions.

A total of three (3) projects or works will be selected and presented as part of Horizon Festival 2022, with successful applicants receiving mentorship from an inspirational artist of the applicant’s choice, selected in consultation with Horizon Festival.

Presentation

Our intention is to bring audiences together for the Homegrown presentations, however artists must be flexible in the delivery of the events and work with Horizon Festival to meet any COVID-19 restrictions on events at the time of delivery.

The project, activity or experience can occur at any time during the 2022 Horizon Festival (26 Aug – 4 Sep). It can be a one-off event or presented more than once over the course of the Festival (e.g. every day at the same time).  

Funds + Support

Applicants can apply for up to $12,000 AUD per project. The amount requested must include all fees, materials, production costs and additional expenses. The Festival has a small budget to support the artist with project  delivery and will be discussed should your application be successful.

In addition to this financial investment, successful applicants will receive:

• Valuable support from a Horizon Festival producer, who will work with you though the whole process of project planning and delivery
• Marketing support and guidance from the Horizon Festival marketing team; and
• Mentorship – Horizon will work with you to consult with experts/ people who inspire you during the development of the work. 

​Who can apply?

Horizon Festival welcomes applications from established artists across all art forms living and creating in the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area (LGA). Applying artists can propose collaborations with artists from outside of the local region including interstate and international, if this is critical to the project and feasible within budget and travel conditions.

We strongly encourage submissions from Kabi Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi) and Jinibara artists and all people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.

Homegrown Information sessions

• Applicant is a LGA Sunshine Coast resident Artistic merit and alignment brief of facilitating community connection and belonging
• The work has a strong connection to place 
• The work must take place on the Sunshine Coast (in the Local Government Area of Sunshine Coast Council)
• Project demonstrates viability, particularly around budget, timeframes and mode of delivery.

All applications for Homegrown are assessed by a panel with representatives from Horizon Festival and Creative Arts at Sunshine Coast Council.

FAQ’S

Can I apply for Homegrown if I live outside of the Sunshine Coast Council LGA?
If you live outside of the Sunshine Coast LGA, unfortunately you are unable to be the primary applicant for Homegrown. However, if you are collaborating with an artist who lives in the Sunshine Coast LGA, they can be the applicant for your project.

Can I work with artists outside the region?
Applying artists can propose collaborations with artists from outside of the local region including interstate and international, if this is critical to the project and feasible within budget and travel conditions.

Can I apply for additional funding for my project?
Yes you can, however you must be able to present the project within the $12,000 Homegrown budget. Additional funds can be used to amplify project outcomes, but the project cannot be reliant on any additional funds. Artists will need to advise Horizon Festival of any additional funding secured and Horizon Festival can also provide Letters of Support to successful applicants.

If I was part of Homegrown 2020 or 2021 can I apply for 2022?
Yes you can, however the project would need to be be distinctly different from the project delivered as part of the 2020 or 2021 programs.
